‘Awful’, ‘Huge liability’, some Arsenal fans slam this defender after Southampton draw
|A selection of Arsenal supporters have slammed the performance of Sokratis Papastathopoulous during the club’s 2-2 Premier League draw against Southampton on Saturday.
The Gunners had the chance to return to winning ways after four league games but they failed to do so following a poor defensive display against the Saints.
The visitors took an early lead in the 8th minute through Danny Ings and that resulted from a quick free-kick where the entire Gunners backline switched off.
Unai Emery’s side were able to level the scores soon after through the feet of Alexandre Lacazette but they could not carry on with the momentum after the break.
The Saints were by far the better side after the interval as they had numerous chances to find the net and they eventually grabbed the lead through James Ward-Prowse after his initial penalty was saved by Bernd Leno.
Arsenal were able to salvage something from the game with a 96th-minute equaliser from Lacazette, but the performance was far from impressive with the defence looking vulnerable with every Saints attack in the second half.
While there were a number of average performers on the day, the Gunners faithful have particularly been unimpressed with Sokratis, who looked anxious with the ball at his feet and conceded possession in and around his own box.
The Greece international did not show any confidence while trying to play from the back and the club could have easily lost the game after his failed dribble in the box, handed the Saints with a clear-cut scoring opportunity which they could not pounce upon.
