Mikel Arteta provides fresh injury update on Reiss Nelson after Sheffield United draw

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed that Reiss Nelson is sidelined with a hamstring injury and believes the attacker could be out of action for an extended period of time.

The 20-year-old has been a regular for the Gunners over the past five weeks but he was excluded from the matchday squad against Sheffield United due to the muscular concern.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw against the Blades, Arteta revealed that Nelson’s injury happened on the training pitch in the lead-up to the weekend clash and confirmed that the forward won’t make a swift return to first-team action.

“No, we had an incident in training. The doctors are still deciding how long it’s going to take, but it’s not looking good,” he was quoted as saying by the club’s official website.

The Gunners have had plenty of injury concerns throughout the season and an extended setback for Nelson will definitely leave Arteta short of options in the wide attacking department.

The north London side failed to return to winning ways against the Blades on Saturday but the result has reduced the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea to 10 points after the Blues’ shock loss at Newcastle United.

Arteta’s side are set to face the Blues in Tuesday’s league outing at Stamford Bridge and they have the chance to avenge the 2-1 defeat last month and jump within seven points off the Champions League spots.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang still suspended, the manager may have only Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka as the forward options off the bench, suppose the latter is relieved from his left-back duties.
