Arsenal confirm the signing of 26-year-old Spaniard

Arsenal have announced the signing of Pablo Mari on loan from Flamengo with the option for a permanent purchase in the summer.

The Spanish centre-back was initially expected to join the Gunners last weekend but the move was delayed due to a disagreement over the transfer terms.

Flamengo were apparently reluctant to accept anything other than a permanent transfer for the player, but after a fresh set of negotiations, the Gunners were finally able to seal the deal.

“Spanish defender Pablo Mari is set to join us on loan until the end of the season. We have an option to make the deal permanent in the summer,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

Mari is expected to provide the central defensive depth for the rest of the campaign where the Gunners will be without the services of Calum Chambers, who underwent a surgery for a knee ligament injury.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard may not be the only purchase for the club in the transfer window, as per The Athletic‘s David Ornstein, who has claimed that the club are set to sign Cedric Soares in the next 24 hours.

The right-sided defender has just five months remaining on his existing deal with Southampton but the Gunners are nonetheless looking to land his signature on loan with the option for a permanent free transfer in the summer.

Arsenal are scheduled to face Burnley on the road in the Premier League this weekend and manager Mikel Arteta will be aiming for a victory to take advantage of any drop in points from fourth-placed Chelsea, who are occupying the final Champions League spot for next term. The Gunners are presently 10 points adrift of their London rivals in the standings.
