Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will stay with the club beyond this summer’s transfer window.
Aubameyang has been the standout performer in the club’s frontline this term and he has already netted 20 times in all competitions.
The 30-year-old recently stated that he is ‘really happy‘ at the club but doubts remain over his future with his contract expiring in 15 months‘ time.
While there is the optimism that the striker will sign a new deal, there is also the possibility that he could be sold in the summer, if his contract standoff persists.
In an interview with Esports, as relayed by Metro, Leno was asked about the club’s transfer plans for the summer but he remained unsure over the possible changes.
The German added that there is the chance of Aubameyang leaving the Gunners but he is hopeful that the club-captain will put pen-to-paper on a new deal.
“I’m not sure, it depends who’s going to leave and who stays. I don’t know. I think it depends if Auba signs a new contract or (if) he leaves. I don’t know what they are going to do. But if he leaves, of course, you need another player. But I think he’s going to stay,” he told.
Obviously, the board will need to find a replacement, if Aubameyang heads through the exit door, but there are no assurances that the new signing will instantly make an impression in the Premier League.
As such, the hierarchy must find the breakthrough over a new contract with the Gabon international, considering he is still in his peak despite approaching his 31st birthday.
Aubameyang has netted 49 goals from 74 Premier League appearances for Arsenal. He is on course to become the fastest Gunners player to score 50 Premier League goals ahead of club legends Thierry Henry and Ian Wright.
