‘Absolutely incredible’: Nigel Winterburn impressed with Arsenal star, who has played out of position

Former Arsenal star Nigel Winterburn has been hugely impressed with the displays of young graduate Bukayo Saka from the makeshift left-back position.

The 18-year-old has enjoyed a terrific breakthrough season with the club and he has made 29 appearances, where he has registered three goals and nine assists.

Part of that contribution has come from the left-back spot where the teenager has regularly played since December 2019 due to injuries to Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney.

Speaking on the Chronicles of a Gooner podcast, Winterburn expressed his excitement over the teenager’s adaptation to a position, where he has never played during his youth career.

“That role suits him really well. In terms of what he’s done at left-back, it’s absolutely incredible. He’s adapted and what I love that he’s doing is moving forward and coming onto the ball and he’s almost not being marked,” he told.

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old also spoke about the quality of the deliveries into the box and said that some of the crosses from the youngster have been ‘absolutely sensational’.

“He’s so dangerous when he’s in possession of the ball and his quality of crossing in some of the balls he’s put in for some of the goals is absolutely sensational,” he added.

Saka was impressive for the north London giants before the coronavirus shutdown and he contributed four goals and one assist from eight appearances – all of which came from the left-back role.

When the season recommences, manager Mikel Arteta has a potential selection headache on his hands, considering Kieran Tierney will be up for contention after recovering from a shoulder problem.

Still, Saka should be backed to keep his place, particularly with his consistent displays for the Gunners before the season was brought to a halt because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elsewhere, Saka’s contract with the club expires at the end of next season and the hierarchy need to act fast and commit him to a new long-term deal with a reasonable wage hike.

Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool are among the high-profile sides tracking his situation but Football.London’s James Benge said last month that the Gunners have the belief that Saka will prolong his stay in north London.
