Cedric Soares yet to agree Arsenal extension and could depart without playing a game

Cedric Soares signed for Arsenal on loan from Southampton in the January transfer window. He was signed to provide backup to Hector Bellerin. Arsenal are said to have paid Southampton just under £1 million for the loan deal in addition to agreeing to pay his wages believed to be around £65,000 a week.

According to Goal, Arsenal have not agreed a contract extension with Cedric and the player could leave the club without making a single appearance. He will be a free agent after June 30th. The Portuguese full back was injured when he joined the club and took longer to recover than initially expected. As a result, he was unable to play a single game for the Gunners before the coronavirus brought football to a halt.

The 28 year old has recovered from his knee injury but suffered a nasty facial injury in training which caused a swelling around his nose and left eye. As a result, he did not feature in either of Arsenal’s friendlies against Charlton and Brentford. It is still unclear whether he will be available for the Gunners’ opening game in the Premier League against Manchester City and their subsequent games against Brighton, Southampton and Sheffield United in the Emirates FA Cup Quarter Final which will all take place before his current contract expires.

Arsenal are hopeful of agreeing a short term extension with Cedric as they are scheduled to play 7 Premier League games and up to 2 FA Cup games after his current contract expires. Cedric will have to decide whether it is worth taking the risk of playing games beyond June 30th as injuries suffered during this period could hurt his chances of securing a lucrative contract at a top club. It must, however, be noted that Cedric will want to impress the management at Arsenal as his first preference could very well be securing a long term deal at the Emirates.

If Cedric and Arsenal are to come to an agreement over a short term extension, it must happen before June 23rd.
