“Atletico are pushing Partey out the door and have got indications he will join Arsenal” – Guillem Balague

Atletico Madrid are pushing Partey out of the club and believe he is headed to the Premier League according to Guillem Balague. They have heard that Arsenal is likely to be the club that he signs for. Balague has also discussed the Upamecano situation and claims he has been told by Red Bull Leipzig that the player is close to renewing his contract with the German club.

According to Balague, Arsenal’s finances are extremely restricted and it is unlikely that the club will be involved in deals that involve large transfer fees this summer. The financial limitations of the club are said to be down to increased expenditure in the last two years as well as the repercussions of the coronavirus.

On Arsenal’s finances and Dayot Upamecano’s future, Balague said:

“Upamecano has been linked with Arsenal. Let me tell you, I don’t think they have a lot of money to put out there. I don’t think they’re going to be able to spend €40, 50 million on players. I don’t believe that is the case. We will see but because of expenditure from last year, this year and of course the COVID situation, means they haven’t got a lot of money. RB Leipzig are working hard to convince him to stay and to renew his contract. The club have told me that they are close to renewing the contract. He is a top, top centre back. Perhaps he feels it is not the time to leave. He will have time to do so. But as I say, the club is optimistic that he can stay on.”

On Thomas Partey’s situation at Atletico Madrid amid the links with Arsenal, Balague said:

“Thomas Partey has been linked to Arsenal. Even his Dad has said that his buyout is €50 million. So if anybody wants him, he’s available. Alright, that is true. Atletcio are pushing him out of the door as well because what is coming out of the club is that ‘Well, we cannot do anything if somebody comes with €50 million’ almost like wishing that those €50 million arrived. They are saying that they believe that Thomas won’t stay there next season. But isn’t that another way of saying he’s for sale? And they believe that it will be the Premier League and have got indications that Arsenal will be the one. Yet again, €50 million for Partey. It is very difficult. Getting the information I’m getting about the kind of money that’s available at Arsenal and it’s not a lot: I’ll be very, very surprised if that happens. So what I can tell you from it, is that, ofcourse he is somebody that Arsenal likes. I’m not sure they have the money to pay the €50 million. Meanwhile the player and Atletico Madrid are open to moving on. Remember that Thomas Partey was approached by Pochettino to come to Spurs. It didn’t happen because the money wasn’t made available for Pochettino and that means that it has been a while now that Thomas Partey has been thinking of leaving. So interesting one and one to keep an eye on.”

It is worth noting that most of the press said very similar things about Arsenal’s financial capacity last summer. It was widely reported that Arsenal had a £45 million pound budget. By the end of the window, the Gunners had spent north of £100 million on transfers including the £72 million record signing of Nicolas Pepe from Lille. The global pandemic is certain to have an impact on transfer dealings in general but Arsenal fans can still be hopeful of Raul Sanllehi and Edu Gaspar working their magic and finding creative ways to recruit top talent in the summer.
