David Luiz pushing for two year contract extension at Arsenal
|David Luiz has not signed a new deal with Arsenal because he wants a two year extension according to the Daily Mail.
It is believed that Arsenal have an option to automatically extend Luiz’s stay at Arsenal for a further 12 months. He and his agent, Kia Joorabchian, would prefer being offered a longer contract by the Gunners and have suggested the same to Arsenal. The Gunners are opposed to this proposal because they cannot justify paying Luiz his current wage of £120,000 a week in 2022 when he will be 35 years old.
Arsenal could choose to negotiate the terms of the deal by offering the former Chelsea defender a far lower salary if he desires a two year deal. Whether Luiz and Joorabchian would agree to such a deal remains unclear.
The player’s agent has indicated that his future will be clear by June 23rd at the latest. He has cited the coronavirus as the reason for the delay. He went on to say that in addition to Luiz’s contract, there are several issues within the whole structure that will also be resolved in the coming days. Many are speculating that he is referring to the futures of a host of other players at the club.
