David Luiz’s contract situation will be resolved ‘this week’ – Agent

David Luiz’s future at Arsenal will be decided this week according to the player’s agent, Kia Joorabchian. The former Chelsea defender signed for Arsenal on a 12 month deal with the option of an additional year last summer.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Joorabchian said:

“The situation from Arsenal’s point of view will be resolved this week. Not just David Luiz’s situation. There are several issues within the whole structure that will be resolved.”

David Luiz has made well catalogued errors during his time at Arsenal. He has conceded four penalties and been sent off on three occasions this season. His latest high profile error came in Arsenal’s first game back in the Premier League against Manchester City last night.

Luiz began the match on the bench but came on in the middle of the first half due to an injury suffered by Pablo Marí. The Brazilian made an error that led to Sterling giving Manchester City the lead on the stroke of halftime. Things went from bad to worse when Luiz brought down Riyad Mahrez in the penalty box early in the second half.

He was sent off and City were awarded a penalty which Kevin de Bruyne converted with ease. The Arsenal defender’s error strewn performance gave the Gunners a mountain to climb to get back into the tie. The game ended 3-0 and Luiz spoke to the press to take full responsibility for his side’s defeat.

While Luiz is famous for lapses in concentration and Arsenal fans have seen the impact his errors can have first hand, it must also be noted that he has been much improved under Mikel Arteta barring last night’s game. He has put in a number of impressive performances and has played an important role in the improvement of the Arsenal rearguard.

He has arguably been Arsenal’s most important defender this season. There is no denying that he is often a liability to his own team but it would be unfair to talk about David Luiz and not paint the whole picture.

Arsenal have a difficult decision to make and it isn’t made any easier by the fact that the whole world of football is watching their every step on the back of Luiz’s horror show last night.
