Guendouzi could face FA ban after grabbing Maupay by the throat in defeat to Brighton

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi could face being charged by the FA after grabbing Brighton striker Neal Maupay by the throat during Saturday’s clash at the Amex Stadium.

The confrontation occurred after the 23-year-old forward scored for the Seagulls in the 95th minute to win the game for his club.

Earlier in the match, Maupay had enraged the Arsenal players after jumping into goalkeeper Bernd Leno which caused him to land awkwardly and suffer a potentially serious knee injury.

Maupay’s winning goal received a lot of backlash from the Arsenal players, namely Guendouzi when he decided to grab his fellow countryman by the throat.

According to Sami Mokbel of Mail Online, Arteta could be without the midfielder for Thursday’s trip to Southampton due to suspension.

It’s reported that the Football Association will wait to see if Martin Atkinson included the incident involving Guendouzi and Maupay in his match report.

It’s believed that if the incident wasn’t mentioned, the FA could take retrospective action against the 21-year-old for the incident that also sparked a mass confrontation between the players.

The report goes on to say that further disciplinary issues will need to be resolved by the FA. The governing body will also consider if both clubs should be charged for failing to control their players during the confrontation after the final whistle.

Additionally, the league itself will have to determine if the ready to play protocols were breached during this incident. This is because the protocol prohibits mass gatherings due to the social distancing measures that are currently in place.

Arsenal return to Premier League action on Thursday when they travel to Southampton in their third game back.
