Arsenal to announce permanent signing of Pablo Mari in the next 24 hours

Arsenal will announce the permanent signing of Spanish centre back Pablo Mari from Brazilian club Flamengo in the next 24 hours.

Mari will cost the Gunners £13.5 million. The breakup of the fee is £4.5 million as the loan fee, £4.5 million as the first installment of the compulsory purchase clause, £1.8 million as the second installment of the compulsory purchase clause to be paid after six months and £2.7 million in bonuses based on number of appearances, qualification for the champions league and trophies won.

This means Flamengo are guaranteed to receive £10.8 million and based on incentives could stand to make up to £13.5 million.

In a recent press conference, Flamengo’s Vice President Marcos Braz confirmed Mari’s sale, according to Goal. He said:

“In fact, Pablo Marí was sold. There is no question about that. We know about the serious, important injury, but this issue is already resolved and at the right time all the numbers will come out on the balance sheets.”

Mari signed for Arsenal on loan from the Brazilian club in January of this year. He made his debut against Portsmouth in the FA Cup. His league bow came against West Ham United in a 1-0 win at the Emirates in what was the club’s last Premier league game before football was suspended due to the coronavirus.

The Spanish defender started Arsenal’s first game after football resumed against Manchester City at the Etihad. He suffered an ankle injury in the middle of the first half and had to be taken off. Mari will miss the remainder of the campaign due to his injury and it is understood he will require surgery.

Mari is highly regarded by Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta who indicated that he would like to sign the defender on a permanent deal. It looks like Arteta’s wish is being granted and Pablo Mari will be permanently relocating to North London.
