David Luiz’s new contract will see him on ‘significantly reduced terms’
|David Luiz’s new deal with Arsenal will see him on significantly reduced terms and this reduction has in part enabled Arsenal to offer Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari permanent deals according to Sam Dean of The Telegraph.
David Luiz, Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares all signed new deals with the Gunners last week. Luiz signed a one year extension while Mari and Cedric both signed four year deals with the club.
Luiz signed for Arsenal from Chelsea in the summer of 2019 for £8 million. He has alternated between being the club’s best centre back and a massive liability to the team.
Under Arteta, the Brazilian has put in a string of good performances and played a key role in the team’s improved defensive record. He seemed to undo all of his good work with a disastrous performance in Arsenal’s first Premier League game after the resumption of football against Manchester City. After coming on as a first half substitute due to an injury suffered by Pablo Mari, he was at fault for Sterling’s opener and then gave away a penalty early in the second half for which he was sent off. This put the spotlight on his future with the Gunners and amidst a lot of criticism, the club handed him a 12 month extension.
