Arsenal ready to turn to Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst should Auba or Laca leave
|Arsenal have Wolfsburg striker Wout Weghorst ‘in mind’ should one of Pierre Emerick Aubameyang or Alexander Lacazette leave the club this summer according to Bild via Sport Witness. The German club would strongly consider an offer in excess of £32 million.
Alexander Lacazette has struggled for form this year and there has been speculation that the French striker could leave the Emirates in the summer. The former Lyon centre forward has two years left on his current deal at Arsenal but there has been little progress regarding a possible contract extension.
The player is said to have asked the club to provide him with clarity on his future. Atletico Madrid are known to be admirers of Lacazette and his name has even been mentioned in a potential swap deal that would see him move to the Wanda Metropolitano and Thomas Partey arrive at the Emirates.
Aubameyang has one year remaining on his deal and is yet to extend his contract with the Gunners. Arsenal are hopeful of finding an agreement to keep the Gabon international at the Emirates for the foreseeable future but are aware that they have to be prepared for the possibility of the club captain leaving North London this summer.
The Gunners are said to have Dutch striker Wout Weghorst in mind as a possible signing should they need a centre forward in the summer transfer window. The 27 year old signed for Wolfsburg from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2018. He has scored 38 goals and provided 12 assists in 78 games for the club. This season, he has scored 20 goals and provided 5 assists in 42 games across all competitions.
Weghorst is a bit of a rarity in the modern game having not come through a youth academy and only playing as high as the ninth tier of Dutch football until he was 18 years old. He signed his first professional contract at the age of 20. His unconventional path to the top level has helped him develop a dogged attitude. His story is similar to that of Leicester City’s talisman Jamie Vardy.
Former Wolfsburg striker Grafite sees similarities between Weghorst and his former Wolfsburg teammate, Edin Dzeko.
Standing at 6’6’’, the Dutch striker is known for his aerial prowess, hold up play and eye for goal. In addition to Arsenal, he is said to be attracting interest from Newcastle.
