Kia Joorabchian and Arsenal officials to travel to Lisbon next week to seal Joelson deal

Kia Joorabchian and an Arsenal delegation will travel to Lisbon next week to meet with Sporting officials and look to seal the transfer of Joelson Fernandes to Arsenal, according to Portuguese media outlet A Bola

Arsenal are very interested in signing the 17 year old who has been likened to Cristiano Ronaldo. He has a buyout clause of £41 million. He is the latest graduate of the Sporting Lisbon academy that has produced the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma in the past. Joelson made his debut for the Portuguese club earlier this month and has made four appearances in total.

The player has refused to sign a new contract with Sporting Lisbon so far. The Portuguese club wanted to increase his release clause to £91 million but his father, Eusebio Mango Fernandes and agent, Kia Joorabchian, refused to agree to this. Sporting has since softened their stance on the increased buyout clause and has presented a deal that would see his release clause stand at just under £73 million but this has also been met with resistance from Joelson’s representatives.

The Gunners have shown a willingness to trigger his buyout clause if they are unable to find an agreement with Sporting that would see them pay less for the player.

Joelson has been left out of Sporting Lisbon’s squad for their upcoming derby against Benfica. There is a lot of speculation that this decision has been taken due to the uncertainty surrounding the 17 year old’s immediate future.
