Dayot Upamecano will sign a two year contract extension with Red Bull Leipzig, according to German media outlet Bild.
By signing a two year deal, the French defender will be contracted to the German club until 2023. RB Leipzig feared that Upamecano would leave the club for free next summer and were determined to avoid that situation. They made it clear that the player would either sign an extension or be sold in the summer.
The 21 year old does not feel this is the right time to move to another club. He would like to stay in Germany for at least another year and then consider a move away from Leipzig.
A £45 million release clause has been inserted into his new contract and so if a suitable offer arrives for him next year, he will be allowed to leave and the German club will receive a fee. RB Leipzig reached a similar agreement with Timo Werner last year and the German attacker recently signed for Chelsea.
Arsenal hold a long standing interest in the player and are believed to have had a £55 million bid for the French centre back rejected last summer. There were strong rumours linking him to the Gunners this summer but it looks like the North London club will have to wait for one more year to sign Upamecano.
The Frenchman is one of the most exciting young central defenders in the world and has attracted interest from several top European clubs. If he leaves RB Leipzig next summer, he is intent on moving to a club where he is guaranteed first team football, even if that means turning down some of Europe’s best teams.
