Arsenal are in talks with Barcelona to sign Coutinho on loan and pay a part of his wages, according to Gerard Romero of Spanish radio station RAC 1.
Coutinho moved to Barcelona in January 2018 from Liverpool for an initial fee of £105 million that could rise to £142 million based on bonuses. He has failed to justify his price tag during his time in Spain and was loaned out to Bayern Munich for the 2019/20 season.
The Bavarian club had an option to turn his loan into a permanent move but have decided against it. The Brazilian will stay with the German champions until the end of their Champions League campaign and then return to Barcelona.
The Spanish giants are desperate to move Coutinho on as they would like to generate funds to sign their primary transfer targets like Lautaro Martinez. Due to the coronavirus, Barcelona will find it difficult to make signings without selling some of their players. They are not open to swap deals for Coutinho and would prefer to recoup some of the money they spent on him.
The Blaugrana would be willing to sell him if they received an offer of £72.4 million but are also open to sending the player out on loan. Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has requested the club to sign Coutinho. He believes the Brazilian still has much to offer and can help lead Arsenal back to the top.
Arsenal are currently in discussions with Barcelona to secure a loan for the player. It is believed that the two clubs could split the player’s wages over the course of the season. This is proof of how keen Barcelona are to offload the player. The Gunners have also been affected financially due to the pandemic and are looking to generate creative solutions to make the right signings.
