Arsenal are interested in signing Sevilla centre back Diego Carlos, according to The Telegraph.
The Gunners are looking to sign a central defender this summer. They have already sealed the permanent transfers of Pablo Mari and William Saliba but believe that they are still one player short in that department.
Injuries suffered by Callum Chambers, Pablo Mari and Shkodran Mustafi mean they are likely to start next season with a shortage of central defenders. Mikel Arteta recently said that they will need to address that in the coming weeks. It has also been reported that the Gunners will listen to offers for Holding, Sokratis and Mustafi as they look to rebuild their defence.
Diego Carlos has had an outstanding debut season in Spain and helped Sevilla qualify for next season’s Champions League. He joined the Spanish side from French side Nantes last summer. This season, he made 41 appearances for Julen Lopetegui’s side and played a crucial role in helping Sevilla have the third best defensive record in La Liga.
The Brazilian defender has been linked with a move to Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks but it seems head coach Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu Gaspar would like to bring the player to the Emirates. He has a buyout clause of £68 million but it is believed that Sevilla would be willing to sell him for around £54 million.
The North London club’s transfer budget has been significantly boosted as a result of their FA Cup victory which has earned them a spot in next season’s Europa League.
