Fiorentina and AC Milan interested in signing Lucas Torreira
|Fiorentina are interested in signing Lucas Torreira this summer, according to Italian media outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport. AC Milan, who registered an interest in the player last summer, remain the likeliest destination for the Uruguayan, according to Sam Dean of the Telegraph.
Torreira joined Arsenal in 2018 and enjoyed a strong debut season in North London. His second season, however, has been far from impressive. He was played out of position by former Gunners head coach Unai Emery and was in and out of the team.
Under current boss Mikel Arteta, he featured significantly in the first team until the winter break. During this period, Dani Ceballos was selected ahead of the former Sampdoria midfielder and he excelled, causing Torreira to lose his place in the starting eleven.
The Uruguayan suffered a serious injury in Arsenal’s FA Cup fifth round clash against Portsmouth which kept him on the sidelines for a significant period of time. His injury, however, coincided with the suspension of English football due to the coronavirus and he regained fitness not too long after the resumption of the Premier League in June.
Despite returning to fitness, he found himself on the bench for a majority of the games after the Premier League restart due to Ceballos’ inspired form. He started two out of the last six league games of the season and did not start in either the semi final or the final of the FA Cup.
The 24 year old is keen on regular first team football and currently, that looks unlikely at Arsenal. His agent had said that he was open to a return to Italy last summer and while Arsenal were unwilling to entertain offers for him then, it looks like the Gunners would be open to selling him in the upcoming transfer window especially as they are keen on raising funds.
The former Sampdoria midfielder has attracted interest from Fiorentina who have reportedly told him he would be an essential part of their project. Milan wanted to sign the player last summer and seem ready to reignite their interest in him in the upcoming transfer window. Torreira is concerned about his place in the Uruguayan national team and needs to be playing regularly to give himself the best chance of retaining his spot in the side.
The Gunners paid £26 million for the player and would expect to at least recoup the money they paid to secure his services. Atletico Madrid are also reportedly interested in Torreira but would not be able to guarantee regular game time. The 24 year old is known to prefer a move to Italy.
