Arsenal win the race to sign Gabriel, medical scheduled for tomorrow

Arsenal have won the race to sign Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille, according to Jason Burt of the Telegraph. The player is scheduled to undergo a medical tomorrow, according to Duncan Castles of the Sunday Times.

Gabriel will sign a five year contract with the Gunners. Arsenal will pay £22.6 million to sign the player from Lille and the fee could rise to £27 million based on bonuses. Napoli were very interested in signing the player but it is believed that they wanted more time as they were keen on having clarity on Kalidou Koulibaly’s future before signing the Brazilian defender, according to Italian media outlet Calciomercato

The Gunners conceded 48 goals in the league last season and had the second worst defensive record among the top eight Premier League sides. Their inconsistencies at the back have been criticised on a regular basis and it has been clear that they are in need of better defenders.

Head coach Mikel Arteta has been keen on strengthening his options at centre back and the club will soon announce the signing of one of the most promising young centre backs in world football.

The 22 year old was an integral part of a Lille side that finished fourth in the French league last season. They had the fourth best defensive record in the country. The Brazilian made 34 appearances in all competitions for the French club in the 2019/20 campaign.
