Gabriel has not completed his medical but a move to Arsenal is close, according to Mohamed Bouhafsi of French media outlet RMC Sport.
Lille kick off their 2020/21 season tonight against Rennes but Gabriel will not take part. The French club do not want to complete a deal on the day of their first game of the season and have denied that there is a total agreement among all three parties. It is, however, accepted that a deal with Arsenal is close.
There were some reports suggesting that Manchester United were trying to steal a march on Arsenal at the last minute and lure Gabriel to Old Trafford but United are stalling and yet to submit an official bid for the player.
Napoli, who have been Arsenal’s main competitors in the race for the player’s signature, want the Brazilian to delay his decision as they are keen on selling Koulibaly, who has been linked with Manchester City, before signing Gabriel. The 22 year old looks set to make a final decision in the coming days, however, and that does not bode well for the Italian club as Koulibaly’s sale is far from a done deal.
The Gunners are confident of getting this deal over the line and there is a consensus that the player’s move to North London is more a question of ‘when’ than ‘if’.
