Gabriel has spent the afternoon at London Colney and is applying the finishing touches to his move to Arsenal, according to Charles Watts of Goal.
Arsenal have agreed a £27 million fee including bonuses with Lille for the Brazilian defender and hope to make an official announcement shortly. The 22 year old has been under strict medical supervision since arriving in London as he has travelled from France, a country that is on the United Kingdom’s quarantine list.
He is currently undergoing a medical in London, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. Arsenal secured the required permission for the player to undergo a medical before starting his quarantine.
The player was Arsenal’s top defensive target this summer and the North London club will be thrilled to be welcoming him to the Emirates. He is one of the most exciting young centre backs in world football. He has the second best tackle success rate among central defenders who have made at least 40 tackles in Europe’s top five leagues, according to WhoScored.
He was a crucial part of a Lille side that finished fourth in the French league last season. They had the fourth best defensive record in the country. He made 34 appearances in all competitions for the French club in the 2019/20 campaign.
The Gunners conceded 48 goals in the Premier League last season and had the second worst defensive record among the top eight sides in the English top flight. Their vulnerability in defence has been criticised on a regular basis and it has been clear that they are in need of a better calibre of central defender. Gabriel will significantly improve Arsenal’s options at the back.
