Leeds closing in on signing of Sam Greenwood

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Arsenal’s Sam Greenwood, according to Phil Hay of The Athletic

Greenwood is very highly rated at Arsenal and the North London club will be loath to lose him this summer. He joined Arsenal from Sunderland in 2018 and has been hugely impressive for the Under 18 side. He has scored 21 goals and provided 12 assists in 54 appearances for the Under 18s. He is a striker but is also capable of playing out wide and in the number 10 position.

The 18 year old made five appearances for Arsenal’s Under 23 side last season and scored a goal against Derby County. It looked like he was all set to become a regular in Steve Bould’s team. The Englishman has attracted attention from Juventus and AC Milan in the past.

Leeds United are interested in signing players who are at the Under 23 level but are capable of breaking into the first team. Greenwood definitely falls into this category and is sure to have been attracted by the allure of potentially playing for the first team of a Premier League side next season.

The newly promoted Premier League side have made an offer of £1.5 million rising to £3 million with add ons for the player, according to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph. Manchester United and AC Milan have also watched Greenwood but Leeds are leading the race to sign him.

Another highly rated striker in Arsenal’s academy, Folarin Balogun, also looks set to leave the club this summer. He has one year remaining on his deal and is yet to sign a new contract. Brentford have shown an interest in the player. As long as he doesn’t sign a new deal with the Gunners, they will be looking to move him on.
