Arsenal win 4-1 against MK Dons in pre-season friendly

Arsenal beat MK Dons 4-1 in a friendly at the Stadium MK.

The Gunners scored their first goal in the fourth minute of the game. MK Dons goalkeeper Lee Nicholls made a mess of a clearance and Mohamed Elneny put the ball in the top corner from 35 yards out. It was an impressive effort from the Egyptian who is back at the club after his loan spell with Besiktas came to an end.

The second goal came at the end of a wonderful move from the North London side. Cedric Soares made a nice pass to Bukayo Saka down the right wing and Arsenal’s new number 7 cut the ball back to Eddie Nketiah who finished very well to put Arsenal two goals to the good.

William Saliba, who made his first appearance for the Gunners, was unperturbed for most of his time on the pitch. There was one moment when an MK Dons player ran past him and was looking to send in a cross but Saliba impressively used his pace to make up ground and stopped the cross from being sent in.

MK Dons pressed Arsenal impressively near our own penalty box but this offered Arsenal a lot of space in the hosts’ half and in the early period of the first half, the Gunners looked very dangerous. MK Dons settled into the game and halved the deficit via a freak own goal from Rob Holding. A ball was curled in from the right and Holding inadvertently headed the ball past Bernd Leno and into the Arsenal goal.

Head coach Mikel Arteta made a raft of changes at half time and gave the likes of Emile Smith Rowe, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock some game time. Arsenal continued to look impressive and 19 year old Mark McGuiness scored a wonderful header to restore the North London side’s two goal lead. McGuiness looked especially solid as did 18 year old Ben Cottrell.

Reiss Nelson won a penalty in the closing stages of the game after a good run and scored the spot kick to end the match 4-1.
