Maitland-Niles receives first call up to senior England squad

Ainsley Maitland Niles has been called up to the senior England squad for the first time by Gareth Southgate.

The 22 year old won the Community Shield with Arsenal earlier today. He was the man of the match and in addition to his impressive performance, he scored a penalty in the shootout that saw the Gunners seal their victory after the game ended 1-1. His first England callup caps off a great day for the Englishman which also happens to be his birthday.

Maitland Niles has made four appearances for the England Under 21 team. He has played for England at various levels within the youth set ups of the Three Lions. He was a part of the England squad that won the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in 2017.

The Arsenal academy graduate’s future has been a topic of discussion since the Gunners won their fourteenth FA Cup at the start of this month. Arsenal are believed to be open to selling Maitland Niles if they receive a fee in the region of £20 to £25 million.

Wolves, Newcastle and two unnamed German clubs are interested in signing the player. Wolves recently had a £15 million bid rejected by the Gunners. The two clubs are reportedly still in talks and an improved bid is likely to be made shortly.

There are likely to be many other clubs that register an interest in the player on the back of such a great performance against the champions of England. Arsenal themselves will surely be reconsidering whether selling Maitland Niles is really in their best interest.
