Newcastle winning the race to sign Holding on season long loan

Newcastle United are winning the race to sign Rob Holding from Arsenal on a season long loan, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic

Holding has attracted interest from a number of sides this summer. The two clubs still need to strike a deal for him to move to Newcastle on loan and the player is yet to agree personal terms with Steve Bruce’s side. It looks like these details will be finalised after Arsenal’s game against Liverpool in the Community Shield later today.

The former Bolton defender is expected to be involved in the Community Shield clash between Arsenal and Liverpool. Arteta has a lack of defensive options ahead of this game as David Luiz and Sokratis are in quarantine while the likes of Mustafi, Mari and Chambers are currently recovering from injuries.

The Gunners expect to confirm the signing of Gabriel from Lille for £27 million in the near future but as things stand, he is not officially an Arsenal player and will also be subject to a quarantine.

Steve Bruce will see Holding’s arrival on loan as a huge boost for Newcastle, who are in need of a reliable central defender. The deal is unlikely to include an option to make the transfer permanent next year. Leeds United were reportedly never strong contenders in the race to sign Holding.

The Englishman signed for Arsenal from Bolton Wanderers in 2016 for £2 million. Since joining the Gunners, he has made 78 appearances in all competitions and been a part of two FA Cup winning sides.
