Torreira is ‘very close’ to becoming an Atletico Madrid player

Lucas Torreira is very close to becoming an Atletico Madrid player, according to Sebas Giovanelli of Uruguayan media outlet Sport 890.

Diego Simeone is reportedly very keen on signing the former Sampdoria midfielder and is believed to have gotten in touch with the player in a bid to convince him to move to Madrid.

Torreira is not in Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s plans and the club are looking to move him on this summer. He was heavily linked with a move to Torino but the Italian club’s director, Davide Vagnati, has made it clear that the club do not see the signing of a new midfielder as a priority, according to Sky Sports Italy via Football Italia. Vagnati said:

“The coach has had time to evaluate the squad at his disposal, we are content with what [Tomas] Rincon is doing, so a midfielder in that role is no longer necessarily a priority for us. We discussed the new technical and tactical project, he is happy with the players and there is still time to the end of the transfer window, so we’ll see what happens then.”

Atletico Madrid are interested in signing a new midfielder this summer and Simeone’s first choice is Torreira, according to Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital. The Rojiblancos have made their interest clear and are waiting for a response from Arsenal. If they are unable to find an agreement with the Gunners, they will switch their focus to Marc Roca of Espanyol.

Thomas Partey is one of Arsenal’s primary transfer targets in the current transfer window and the club are keen on selling some of their existing players so that they can generate funds and free up space in their squad to pursue the Ghanaian midfielder.

The 27 year old has a £45 million buyout clause and Atletico have so far refused to let the player leave the club unless his release clause is triggered. The Gunners have not met his price yet but will hope the Madrid based side’s interest in Torreira will help facilitate a deal to bring Partey to the Emirates.
