Atletico Madrid are close to sealing the transfer of Lucas Torreira on loan with an option to sign him permanently next summer, according to James McNicholas of The Athletic.
A medical for the player is yet to be scheduled but Arsenal and Atletico are believed to be close to reaching an agreement. The Gunners wanted a fee for Torreira this summer but due to Atletico’s challenging financial position as a result of the pandemic and their stadium payments, the North London side have had to make a compromise and accept this arrangement.
Torreira is keen on regular game time and is unlikely to get significant minutes at Arsenal. He has been convinced by Diego Simeone that he will have an important role to play for Atletico Madrid in the 2020/21 season and possibly beyond.
The Gunners are keen on signing Thomas Partey but he will not be involved in any deal that will see Torreira head to the Wanda Metropolitano. The Rojiblancos are willing to let Hector Herrera leave the club this summer and are signing the Uruguay international as a potential replacement. They continue to insist that Partey will not be allowed to depart the club unless his £45 million release clause is paid in full.
