Mikel Arteta has said he and the club know exactly what they need to do ahead of the transfer deadline in his post-match press conference following Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
He said the club will try their best to secure the deals that they want. This includes both outgoings as well as incomings. He said Edu, the board, the owners and himself are on the same page.
Arteta said he cannot guarantee new signings but that the club recognises that there are certain departments where there is a need for more numbers as well as players with different qualities and are doing their best to address these areas.
Arsenal have signed Willian and Gabriel so far this summer while Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Emiliano Martinez have exited the club. The Gunners are keen on rebuilding their midfield but with less than 36 hours to go before the transfer window ends, they will have to act fast to get the required deals over the line.
Their interest in Houssem Aouar seems to have come to an end as they were not able to find an agreement with Lyon. Thomas Partey is a player they remain interested in but Atletico Madrid have made it clear that any interested club must trigger his 45 million release clause to sign him. Arsenal have so far refused to pay that amount to secure his signature.
Jorginho is another player they have been linked with but Chelsea have knocked back their interest and seem to be intent on keeping the Italian midfielder unless they manage to sign another player in the same position ahead of the deadline.
In terms of outgoings, Torreira has completed his medical ahead of his move to Atletico Madrid on loan. The Spanish giants have an option to make the transfer permanent next summer. They will only complete the transfer of the Uruguay international if they are able to move two players on and have so far failed to do so. Nicolo Kalinic will move to Torino, according to Fabrizio Romano. Hector Herera has had offers from Porto, Leeds and Aston Villa but he has rejected these proposals, according to Matteo Moretto of Sky Sports Italy.
Matteo Guendouzi is closing in on a move to Hertha Berlin on loan without an option or obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer.
Arteta had a message for Arsenal fans. He said:
“I think that I always try to be really honest and clear. Believe me that the ownership, the board, myself, are doing everything we can to maximise the resources we have to improve the team and to sustain and keep the players that are in this club to make this club successful. I have 100% backing from them. It’s not just words, it’s reality. Whoever knows me, if it wasn’t like that I wouldn’t say it but I say it because I feel it and it’s true.”
