Thomas Partey is set to undergo a medical shortly in Spain ahead of his move to Arsenal, according to Chris Wheatley of Gooner Talk who is crediting Charles Watts of Goal and TheAFCBell for breaking the story first.
The Gunners have communicated to La Liga that they will trigger the 27 year old’s £45 million buyout clause. Partey will sign a four year contract with the Gunners and receive a seven figure signing on fee, according to Nick Ames of The Guardian.
The Ghanaian midfielder has been Arsenal’s primary transfer target all summer and the North London side are closing in on their man with hours to go before the transfer window shuts. They have scouted him ever since he was on loan at Almeria and continued keeping tabs on the player as he went from strength to strength at Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish giants will be stunned with the latest developments and devastated to lose one of their key players in the closing stages of the transfer window, according to Spanish media outlet Marca. He has been a key member in Diego Simeone’s squad over the years and the Rojiblancos were hoping he would stay and extend his contract.
The Madrid-based club offered him a new deal last season but the player refused to sign the extension as he felt that the club did not recognise him as an important part of Simeone’s team. Partey’s departure will pave the way for Atletico to confirm the signing of Lucas Torreira on loan from Arsenal.
