Torreira’s agent says his loan move to Atletico does not include a purchase option
|Lucas Torreira’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, has said that his loan move to Atletico was complicated and does not include a purchase option. He said this in an interview with Uruguayan radio station Sport 890, as per Chris Wheatley of Gooner Talk.
The Uruguay international was surplus to requirements at the Emirates and the club were keen to move him on this summer. They preferred to sell him permanently but were unable to find suitable offers and so agreed to send him out on loan to the Rojiblancos. The 24 year old was reportedly very keen on joining Simeone’s side after the Atletico manager convinced him of the important role he would play for the Spanish giants over the course of the season.
It was initially reported that Arsenal wanted the loan deal to include an obligation to make the move permanent next summer but the Madrid-based club were only willing to strike an agreement if the loan included a purchase option. Arsenal supposedly relented and the deal was completed.
Based on what Torreira’s agent has said, this is untrue and Torreira has joined Atletico Madrid on a loan without an option or obligation to make the transfer permanent. He looks set to return to North London at the end of the 2020/21 season. The Gunners will be hoping he has a great season in Spain as this will increase both his price as well as the number of clubs interested in him next summer.
