Aouar says Arsenal were the only club in for him towards the end of the window

Houssem Aouar said Arsenal were the only club in for him towards the end of the transfer window. He said this in an interview to French television channel TF1 via Get French Football News.

On being asked if Arsenal were the only club to be seriously interested in him this summer, he said:

“No, not necessarily. But it is true that at the end it was basically that. So, ultimately I had to make a decision and I am happy to stay here.”

Arsenal were unable to agree a fee with Lyon for the French midfielder’s services this summer. They were very interested in bringing him to North London but towards the end of the window, the French side stopped all negotiations with the Gunners and Aouar decided to stay at Lyon for another season. It is not inconceivable that the North London club will go back in for him next year.

The Gunners were willing to offer Lyon £35 million plus add-ons for their star midfielder but they were looking for £45.5 million plus add-ons. Aouar is now committed to helping Lyon have a memorable season and qualify for next year’s Champions League.

On being asked whether he was disappointed to still be at Lyon after the end of the transfer window, he said:

“No, honestly, this is my town, my club. So it is with immense pride that I play for this club and above all I have a lot of motivation to have a great season with my team.”

The 22 year old is a Lyon academy graduate. He made his debut for the senior side in 2017. He has scored 25 goals and provided 27 assists in 141 games for the club. Aouar will need to deliver for his boyhood side after their poor start to the campaign. They are currently 14th in the French league after the first six games.
