Martin Keown urges Arteta not to repeat Emery’s mistakes
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has warned Mikel Arteta not to make too many changes too quickly.
The Spaniard has done well since taking over at Arsenal but he has changed his system and tactics from time to time.
Martin Keown believes that too many changes will result in the players struggling to find consistency and rhythm. He also claimed that this is a mistake Unai Emery made during his time as the Arsenal manager and Arteta should look to avoid making the same error.
That said, the former Arsenal star rates Arteta highly and he claimed that the Spaniard is the right man for the job.
“They keep changing from one system to another and they did this with Emery,” Keown told Stadium Astro (via Metro).
“That’s what I would like to see now, the same pictures, the same triangles, the same movements, the same partnerships, the same relationships.
“If you keep changing it, you don’t find a rhythm, and that’s something that I found in a very successful team.”
Arsenal have certainly showed progress under Arteta and it will be interesting to see if they can return to the Champions League this season. The Spaniard has already guided them to a Cup win and he will be hoping to succeed with the Gunners in the League as well.
Arteta should look to pick a particular system and stick with it for some time. That would allow the players to get used to his tactics and build an identity going forward.
The Xhaka LCM-RCM Ceballos partnership was dropped too quickly for my liking. Willian having also played too many minutes from the off with it taking time before you can assuredly predict your teammates movements. Gabriel I have no qualms about (other than Tierney needing to come away from LCB to be the best fullback on the pitch
