Arsene Wenger believes the European Super League would destroy the Premier League

There have been talks of a potential European Super League in the coming years which would involve some of the top clubs from Europe’s top five leagues.

However, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that the creation of the European Super League would destroy the Premier League.

According to him, the clubs on the continent are looking to start the European Super League so that they can compete financially with their rivals in the Premier League.

The likes of Liverpool and Manchester United are thought to be keen on the idea and they are in talks over the creation of the new $6 billion tournament.

Top teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona are also expected to compete in the competition which could feature up to 18 clubs.

Such a competition could spell the end for the UEFA Champions League as well. It will be interesting to see if those plans come to fruition over the next few years.

Wenger’s claims certainly make sense and it is evident that the other European clubs are struggling to match up to the financial capabilities of the Premier League clubs and this is an attempt to level the playing field.

He said to Guardian: “The Premier League has a superiority, the other leagues try to destroy the advantage that the Premier League has. For them, the best thing to do that is to create a European League, which would basically destroy the Premier League. So if they get the agreement from the big English clubs, it would happen. We’re in a period of owners who are investors. Their first target is to make more money. And the European Super League is one way, maybe, to make more money.”
