Arsenal interested in signing Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Brandt

Arsenal are interested in signing Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund, according to The Athletic.

The Gunners have scored just 15 goals in 15 Premier League games this season and are struggling to create chances in front of goal. They are in dire need of a creative midfielder and this is likely to be their priority in next month’s transfer window.

The club were close to signing Houssem Aouar from Lyon in the summer but failed to agree a transfer fee with the French side. It is understood that the Gunners have cooled their interest in the 22-year-old and are focussing on their other targets. One of these targets is Dortmund’s Julian Brandt.

The 24-year-old joined the German side from Bayer Leverkusen for £22.9 million in the summer of 2019. After joining Dortmund, he scored seven goals and provided thirteen assists in 42 appearances in his debut season. In the 2020/21 campaign, he has scored just one goal and provided one assist in 22 appearances. He has started just six games in the Bundesliga and is struggling to replicate the form he showed in the last few seasons.

He is a wide player who is capable of playing centrally. Some of his best performances at Leverkusen came after he was moved into a more central position by then-manager Peter Bosz.

At Dortmund, he has often been played out wide and as a striker which has affected his performances. While at Leverkusen, he was considered to be one of the most exciting young players in European football and even though his stock has dropped this season, he is still a player with massive potential. He has scored three goals in 35 appearances for Germany.
