Mustafi to terminate his contract with Arsenal and join Schalke
|Shkodran Mustafi is set to terminate his contract with Arsenal and sign for Schalke, according to Chris Wheatley of football.london.
The German defender has six months remaining on his contract with the Gunners. He is on the fringes of the first team and hasn’t played for the club since Boxing Day. It is understood that the North London club and the player have been in talks to cancel his contract and it is now on the verge of happening.
Schalke defender Ozan Kabak is reportedly set to sign for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp’s side look to address their frailties in defence. The German club have identified Mustafi as their ideal replacement and they have accelerated talks to sign the player.
The 28-year-old has come under a lot of criticism during his time at Arsenal but was an important part of Mikel Arteta’s team last season. He put in a number of impressive displays as the club put together a run that saw them win the FA Cup.
Mustafi suffered an injury in the closing stages of the FA Cup semi final against Manchester City which ruled him out of the final. During his time in North London, the German defender won two FA Cups.
Mustafi will be reunited with former Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac who joined Schalke on loan earlier this month. The World Cup winner joined Arsenal from Valencia for 35 million in the summer of 2016. Since signing for the Gunners, he has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 151 appearances across all competitions.
