Arsenal made an enquiry about Barcelona left back Junior Firpo on deadline day, according to Gerard Romero of Spanish radio station RAC 1.
The Gunners were keen on signing a left-footed left back before the end of the January transfer window. After the departure of Sead Kolasinac to German side Schalke on loan earlier in January, Kieran Tierney is the only left-footed left back at the club. Manager Mikel Arteta has used right-footed players like Cedric Soares and Ainsley-Maitland Niles in this position when Tierney has been out injured.
They were linked with Crystal Palace’s Patrick van Aanholt, Hibernian’s Josh Doig and Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand but a move for one of these three players did not materialise. It is understood that the Gunners reached out to Barcelona about taking Firpo on loan for the rest of the season but an agreement could not be reached.
Firpo has been a peripheral member of the Barcelona first team and head coach Ronald Koeman has admitted that the 24-year-old is not a part of his plans. This season, he has made just 12 appearances in all competitions for the Blaugrana and started only one game in La Liga.
The North London club will now complete the season with just one left-footed left back and look to strengthen their options in this position in the summer.
