Bellerin says teams are not beating Arsenal, the Gunners are losing to themselves

Hector Bellerin has lamented Arsenal’s disciplinary record and said that rather than teams beating the Gunners, the club are losing to themselves, according to the Evening Standard.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 defeat to Wolves in the Premier League at Molineux on Tuesday to bring an end to their seven-game unbeaten run in the league. They went 1-0 up courtesy of a splendid Nicolas Pepe goal and should have had the game in the bag based on the way they dominated the first period.

Instead, they found themselves level and one man down on the edge of half time when David Luiz was adjudged to have fouled Willian Jose in the box. Neves converted the penalty and equalised for the home side. Replays suggest that Luiz did not make a challenge on Jose and that the player on loan from Real Sociedad initiated contact if anything.

Joao Moutinho scored a magnificent goal early in the second half and the Gunners were unable to work their way back into the game. They faced another setback when Leno was sent off for handling the ball outside the penalty box in the 72nd minute. The German goalkeeper will now serve a three-match ban.

Since Arteta’s appointment as Arsenal manager, the club have had a player sent off on nine occasions. This is more than any other club in the Premier League with the second most ill-disciplined team having three players sent off in the same period.

Bellerin captained the North London club in Tuesday’s Premier League defeat and implored his side to improve their disciplinary record. On being asked if the club have had a player sent off too often, he said:

“One hundred per cent [we’ve had too many red cards]”

“We’ve shown that when we’re 11 against 11 on that pitch, it’s completely different. We had complete control in the first half and we probably should have been 2-0 up by the end of it. We paid for those mistakes.”

“I always say that teams are not beating us, we are losing against ourselves. It’s for us to learn. Hopefully this will be the last time. We were on such a good run, great momentum, great confidence in the team.”

“We just need to forget this step because situations like this are not going to happen very often. We’ll go on to the next one.”
