FA confirm Luiz’s red card will stand but Brazilian will only miss one game

Arsenal have confirmed that the Football Association have upheld David Luiz’s red card shown to him in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Wolves at Molineux. The Brazilian defender will only miss one game, according to Chris Wheatley of football.london.

Luiz was sent off for appearing to foul Willian Jose in the box on the stroke of half time. Replays suggest that the player did not try to challenge the Wolves striker and made contact by accident. Despite this, the VAR on the night Jon Moss upheld the on-field referee Craig Pawson’s decision to send the player off.

The Gunners appealed the player’s sending off and manager Mikel Arteta said that he was hopeful the ban would be overturned. Surprisingly, the FA have refused to overturn the ban.

It was initially thought that the 33-year-old would miss Arsenal’s next three Premier League games as a consequence of the direct red card he was shown by the referee but it is understood that he will only sit out the Gunners’ Premier League clash with Aston Villa this weekend.

The former Chelsea defender will be available for selection for the North London side’s game against Leeds United at the Emirates the following weekend.

The North London club issued a statement regarding the FA’s decision. It reads as follows:

“The Football Association have confirmed to us that the red card given to David Luiz on Tuesday against Wolverhampton Wanderers will stand.”

“We have worked really hard to overturn David Luiz’s red card. We presented our case to the FA but are disappointed that our appeal has been unsuccessful.”

“We accept the FA’s decision and continue our preparations for Saturday’s match against Aston Villa.”
