Hazard says he ‘really liked Arsenal’ when he was growing up

Former Chelsea superstar Eden Hazard has said that he really liked Arsenal when he was growing up. He said this in an interview with On The Front Foot.

The Belgium international was linked with a move to Arsenal for a number of years during his time at Lille. Legendary former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was a big admirer of the talented attacker and was interested in signing him early in his career. The other club he was constantly linked with was Real Madrid, the club he currently plays for.

The 30-year-old departed Lille for Chelsea in 2012 and enjoyed seven seasons in West London. He won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League cup and a Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge. He put in a sumptuous display in the 2019 Europa League final as Chelsea dismantled Arsenal 4-1.

The Real Madrid attacker tormented the North London club during his time in England. As a result of his association with Chelsea, his comments about Arsenal have come as a surprise. He said:

“When I was little the team I watched the most was the French national team. For me, the players I looked up to were Zinedine Zidane and Thierry Henry.”

“It’s difficult for me to admit because of my relationship with Chelsea, but I really liked the Arsenal team at the time.”

“They had players like Robert Pires, [Sylvain] Wiltord and [Patrick] Vieira, so it was mainly French players that I followed growing up.”

The former Lille man scored 110 goals and provided 92 assists in 352 appearances for the Blues. Since joining Real Madrid, he has suffered from a number of injuries which has limited his game time. This season, he has three goals in just 13 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish champions.
