Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira to be interviewed for Bournemouth job
|Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira will be interviewed for the managerial vacancy at Bournemouth, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.
The Frenchman was in charge of Nice for two-and-a-half years before being sacked in December 2020. In his first season in charge of the French side, they finished seventh in the league which was one place higher than where they finished in the previous campaign.
They improved even further in Vieira’s second season in charge and achieved a fifth-place finish which saw them qualify for the Europa League.
The 2020/21 campaign did not work out as the former Arsenal captain will have hoped. The French side picked up just five wins from their first 16 league games and were in 11th place. On top of that, they were knocked out of the Europa League with one game to spare. This led to Vieira losing his job.
Prior to taking the Nice job, the former Inter Milan midfielder managed New York City for two-and-a-half years. He was very successful during his time with the American side and led them to their first ever appearance in the MLS play-offs in his first season which ended with a fourth-place finish. In his second season at the club, they finished second.
Vieira will be interviewed by the Bournemouth hierarchy on a Zoom call over the next two days. After the sacking of Jason Tindall, tt is understood that the Cherries are looking for someone with fresh ideas and believe the former Manchester City midfielder fits the bill.
Frank Lampard and John Terry have been ruled out of the race but it is believed that former Huddersfield Town and Schalke boss David Wagner will also be interviewed for the position.
The former Arsenal captain has been linked with the top job in North London for a number of years and Gooners enjoy keeping tabs on the Frenchman as he looks to make a name for himself in the world of management.
Bournemouth are currently sixth in the EFL Championship and only just inside the play-off positions. The Cherries were hopeful of returning to the Premier League by securing automatic promotion but that is looking unlikely at the moment. Maybe Vieira will have something to say about this.
