Twitter permanently suspends account that directed abusive comment towards Nketiah

Twitter has permanently suspended the account that directed abuse comments towards Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, according to Sky Sports.

Nketiah is the latest in a line of footballers to receive abuse on social media. He was sent a racist comment asking him to leave Arsenal on Thursday in response to a picture he posted of himself in training ahead of the Gunners’ Europa League clash with Benfica with the caption ‘Working with a smile!’.

A spokesperson for Twitter said the following to Sky Sports News:

“Racist behaviour has no place on our service and when we identify accounts that violate any of the Twitter Rules, we take enforcement action. The account referenced has been permanently suspended.”

A recent study showed that a number of players including Granit Xhaka, Hector Bellerin and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have received racial and homophobic abuse on social media from a number of accounts, some of which are controlled by Arsenal season ticket holders.

The frequency with which footballers have received social media abuse has been alarming and unlike in the past, when little to no action was taken, Twitter seem to have taken significant steps towards holding the culprit of these abusive comments accountable for their actions.

Referee Mike Dean was recently subjected to death threats for a controversial decision he made during a Premier League game. Managers like Steve Bruce and Mikel Arteta have also said that they have received death threats and abusive comments directed at their families.

A number of high-profile men and women in football have been subjected to abusive comments on social media and it is encouraging to see a social media giant like Twitter finally taking some steps towards making the perpetrators of these crimes face the consequences of their actions.
