Liverpool legend Phil Thompson believes that the £24 million that Arsenal paid to Sheffield United to sign Aaron Ramsdale is an excessive price tag for the 23-year-old goalkeeper.

Thompson cited Sheffield’s relegation last season. Although, Ramsdale may not be blamed entirely for the team’s form slump, but Thompson doesn’t feel like the player had such brilliant performances that Arsenal had to bring him to the Emirates Stadium at any cost.

“What I have seen of him at Sheffield United and Arsenal were paying so much money,” the retired footballer said on ‘Where’s Jeff?’ Podcast. “I know they were relegated and I know you could say well it takes a lot more than a goalkeeper, but he didn’t cover himself in glory in any of the games. I thought he had a torrid season, not saving much.”

Thompson doesn’t seem to be a fan of Bernd Leno either.

“I am not so sure of him, I will be honest. I am not sure of either of them, Leno or Ramsdale,” the Liverpool veteran continued.

Ramsdale is set to succeed Leno as Mikel Arteta’s go-to keeper in the Premier League games after keeping clean sheets in both league games he started. Arsenal legend Ian Wright and Arteta were all praise for the 23-year-old after his performance against Burnley.
