Arsenal fans react to Nuno Tavares’ performance vs Watford

A section of Arsenal fans on Twitter were delighted with the performance of Nuno Tavares during Sunday’s 1-0 premier League win over Watford.

The north London club registered a third-straight league triumph with the slender victory over the Hornets, but they will be disappointed with the attacking display.

Bukayo Saka saw an early goal chalked off by VAR due to an offside call. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang then squandered the chance to score from the penalty spot.

Emile Smith Rowe eventually broke the deadlock before the hour mark. It proved the match-winner. Ben Foster was in excellent form between the sticks for the Hornets.

While Smith Rowe’s goal made the difference to the scoreline, many Gunners fans were delighted for Tavares, who got the nod at left-back for the third league game running.

Kieran Tierney was fit after his ankle injury absence, but Arteta still opted to start the Portuguese on the back of his impressive run of performances in recent weeks.

The 21-year-old did not disappoint. He won eight duels and registered four take-ons. He also won one tackle, one interception while delivering two successful crosses.

In the past, the Gunners have felt the void of Tierney when he has been on the sidelines. Tavares has almost nullified that burden and has excelled with his tireless runs.

Here is how some fans on Twitter reacted to his performance.

Tavares has been an excellent addition to the Gunners defence. He has proved a worthwhile deputy for Tierney in recent weeks, but has yet to be tested defensively.

The £27k-a-week star has earned plaudits for his link-up play and overlapping runs but quite often, the opposition have initiated attacks from the opposite flank.

The Gunners face a tough league outing at Liverpool after the international break where they will come up against the league’s top scorer in Mohamed Salah.

Tierney did not start against the Hornets, having returned to training just days before the game. It won’t come as a surprise if the Scot returns to the starting XI.

The 24-year-old has fared well against the Egyptian in the past. He produced a strong showing when the Gunners previously beat the Reds in the league last year.
