A section of Arsenal fans on Twitter heaped praise on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale despite the club’s disappointing 4-0 Premier League defeat at Liverpool.
The Gunners were always underdogs for the encounter, having failed to beat the Reds at Anfield in the previous eight league outings.
They showed good defensive resolve early on with Ramsdale in fine form between the sticks. Sadio Mane eventually broke the deadlock before the break.
Within minutes of the restart, Nuno Tavares gifted the Reds with the second goal. His poor backpass fell into the path of Diogo Jota, who scored with ease.
Thereafter, the floodgates opened as they conceded two more goals. The scoreline could have been more humiliating if not for Ramsdale’s goalkeeping heroics.
The England international came up with five key saves over the course of 90 minutes. He was definitely the standout performer for the Gunners at Anfield.
Here is how some of the club’s faithful reacted to his goalkeeping display.
Ramsdale has been the Gunners’ best signing of the summer. He was initially regarded as the back-up keeper, but since his promotion, he has been consistent in goal.
The 23-year-old tried his best to keep the Gunners in the game, but was eventually beaten from a set-piece. He still came out of the encounter with flying colours.
Saturday’s defeat provided a reality check for the club. It is quite clear that they are still far off from competing for the title, and the focus should be on the top four.
Despite the loss, they are within three points of the Champions League places in fifth, and will be aiming to return to winning ways against Newcastle United next weekend.
