Mikel Arteta delighted with Alexandre Lacazette’s recent displays for Arsenal

Ahead of the Boxing Day Premier League clash at Norwich City, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said that he is delighted with the recent showing of Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette was a regular on the bench earlier this campaign, but he managed to turn his fortunes around after scoring a last-gasp equaliser against Crystal Palace in October.

The Frenchman has since been a regular starter for the Gunners, and has recently taken over the captain’s armband with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang dropped.

He has relished the added responsibility on his shoulders. The striker bagged the opening goal against Southampton before bagging assists against West Ham and Leeds.

His finishing still needs improvement, but the £19.8m star has excelled up front with his tireless work rate and desire to press opposition defenders at regular intervals.

Speaking ahead of the Canaries clash, Arteta heaped praise on the 30-year-old’s performances and leadership qualities, and wants to see more of the same.

He told Arsenal.com: “We are really happy. The way he’s performing, the way he’s acting and he has to continue like this.”

Lacazette’s current deal with the north London giants expires next summer. There has been no progress over a renewal, and he could leave on a free transfer.

The France international is eyeing a multi-year deal with a pay rise, but the Gunners’ hierarchy are reluctant to meet his demands at the current point of time.

It is up to him to change their stance. He needs to continue his bright form for the rest of the campaign, and guide the club back to the Champions League.

This could boost his prospects of a new deal while also being handed the captaincy on a permanent basis.
