Kieran Tierney produces superb all-round display against Norwich City
|
Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney continued his fine run of form in yesterday’s 5-0 Premier League triumph at Norwich City.
The Gunners were favourites to pick up a win, and it took six minutes for Bukayo Saka to open the scoring. There was a feisty exchange between players thereafter, but that did not disrupt the momentum.
Tierney doubled the Gunners’ lead before the interval. Martin Odegaard produced a delightful assist for the Scot, who guided a low shot into the far corner of Angus Gunn’s net.
The 24-year-old was in superb touch, and could have easily scored a brace. His powerful shot after the break clearly hit the arm of Max Aarons, but no penalty was awarded.
The Gunners eventually sealed a comfortable 5-0 win over the Canaries. Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard had excellent outings in the final third for the Gunners.
Tierney was also impressive. Aside from his goal, he won eight of his 11 ground and aerial duels while having 81 touches.
The Scot was recently down the pecking order under manager Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard picked Nuno Tavares to start at left-back for six straight Premier League games.
While Tavares showed his quality in the attacking third, he was defensively vulnerable away from home. There were no surprises when Tierney was recalled to the starting XI.
Tierney has since nailed down a starting role with regular goal contributions. He has one goal and two assists in his last five league appearances for the north London club.
The £110,000-a-week star will be aiming to keep up the good form when the Gunners entertain Manchester City on New Year’s Day.
It promises to be a difficult challenge. The Gunners have lost their previous nine league games against Pep Guardiola’s side. Their last league win over them was in 2015.
The only positive result in this period was the 2020 FA Cup semi-final where the Gunners scored two excellent counter-attack goals through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang has been dropped from recent matchday squads after a disciplinary breach. He may not be involved on January 1 amid his African Cup of Nations commitments with Gabon.
