Arsenal entertain Manchester City in the New Year’s Day Premier League clash at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are on a superb five-match winning streak, but they still face a difficult challenge against the Cityzens, who have won their last 10 league games.

The north London club have beaten City in two FA Cup semi-finals in 2017 and 2020, but it has been a one-sided affair when it comes to the league encounters.

They have lost their last nine league meetings against Pep Guardiola’s side, scoring just twice. It could be another difficult game despite the home advantage.

Here is how Arsenal could line up against Man City:

Aaron Ramsdale has been exceptional in goal since his league debut for the club in September. He is now an undisputed starter, and could have a busy afternoon.

Takehiro Tomiyasu tested positive for coronavirus before the Norwich City game, and it is unclear whether he will be deemed fit to take on the Cityzens tomorrow.

Hence, no changes are likely in the backline. Ben White is set to continue at right-back with Kieran Tierney on the opposite end. Rob Holding is in line for a second straight start in central defence alongside Gabriel Magalhaes.

Thomas Partey will be leaving for African Cup of Nations only after the City game. He should be a confirmed starter in midfield alongside regular partner Granit Xhaka.

Emile Smith Rowe has been flourished off the bench with goals in each of his last three appearances. Despite this, he may have to settle for another cameo role.

Martin Odegaard has had an exceptional December with three goals and three assists from six outings. The Norwegian should be assured his place in the number 10 role.

The same should be the case with Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. The former netted twice against Norwich recently while Martinelli has also been in peak form.

He has benefitted from the recent injury to Smith Rowe with six goal contributions in seven appearances. Saka and Martinelli look set to keep their places out wide.

Alexandre Lacazette is expected to lead the line. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has been dropped for the past five matches, has already been allowed to leave for AFCON.

The Frenchman was handed the captain’s armband lately, and has led by example with tireless displays. He has five goal achievements in the club’s four-match winning league run.
