Arsenal make bid to sign Brazilian midfielder Danilo

Arsenal have made a formal approach to sign Palmeiras midfielder Danilo this month, Brazilian outlet R7 claims.

The Gunners are short in the central midfield department at the moment with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny away on international duty.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has also been loaned out to Roma. This has left Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga as the senior central midfielders.

Earlier yesterday, Arteta acknowledged that the club will move for a new midfielder. It is now reported that an offer has been made for Danilo.

The Gunners have offered €20 million up front for the 20-year-old with a further €5m in performance-based add-ons.

Palmeiras are not tempted by the proposal as the midfielder has over three years left on his contract which includes a €94m release clause.

They would like to keep him until the ‘middle of the year’, and it is claimed that Danilo is also happy to work under manager Abel Ferreira.

A deal may only materialise if the Brazilian decides to hand in a transfer request.

Our view:

The Gunners’ pursuit of a new midfielder has seen them linked with high-profile names such as Renato Sanches and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Amidst this, their interest in Danilo doesn’t come as a surprise as there has been a change in transfer policy since the summer transfer window.

The onus has been pursuing young and upcoming stars over big-name signings. Technical director Edu Gaspar could be spearheading the move.

Edu has good knowledge on Brazilian football, and he played a key role alongside Francis Cagigou in signing Gabriel Martinelli from Ituano in 2019.

Danilo does not possess an aerial presence at 176 cm, but he has impressed with his tackling and distribution in his time in the Brazilian top-flight.

His workrate is one of the key attributes that may have impressed Arteta and co, but any deal could be dependent on the player pushing for a transfer.

A work permit could be progressed easily despite Brexit. The midfielder has been performing ‘regularly at a high level’ for one of Brazil’s most recognised clubs.

Danilo made 49 appearances for Palmeiras in 2021, the vast majority of those from defensive midfield. He bagged four goals and three assists in the process.
