Arsenal enter race to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo

Arsenal have joined Manchester City and Liverpool in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven forward Cody Gakpo, French outlet Foot Mercato claims.

The Gunners are looking to part ways with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this month but prior to that, they are keen on pursuing a quality replacement.

Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic was the prime transfer target, but the Serbian was always leaning towards a move to Juventus. He could join them soon.

Alexander Isak and Raul de Tomas have been rumoured as alternatives lately, but they won’t be sold for €90 million and €70m respectively this month.

It is now reported that Gakpo is on the club’s radar. The 22-year-old could be available for a €30m fee.

Our view:

The Netherlands international can play anywhere in attack, but he has largely been successful operating from the left-wing position this term.

He has impressed with 10 goals and 11 assists from 28 games for PSV. It remains to be seen whether the Gunners make a move for him.

Gakpo has excelled with regular goalscoring contributions, but there is a big level of transition from the Eredivisie to the Premier League.

Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech is a fine example of a player, who has struggled for consistency since his hyped transfer from Ajax in the summer of 2020.

Meanwhile, the youngster is primarily a wide player. It is not a position where the Gunners are looking to bolster with the vast competition present.

He can also play up front, but does not offer much aerial presence or hold-up play. The club could look elsewhere if they are eyeing a specialist striker.
