Thomas Partey impresses for Arsenal in Liverpool defeat
|Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey produced another top performance in the Premier League during the club’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Wednesday.
The Gunners had the chance to extend their one-point lead over fifth-placed Manchester United, but they could not find a way past the Reds.
They were limited chances on goal for either club, but the Merseyside outfit capitalised on theirs to secure a solid victory at the Emirates Stadium.
Gabriel Martinelli was excellent from the left wing despite the disappointing result. He got the better of Trent Alexander-Arnold on several occasions.
However, Partey was equally impressive in the centre of the park, and showed the vast improvement he has made since the beginning of the year.
The £36 million-rated star won nine ground duels last night. He also completed four dribbles alongside five long balls, three tackles and two interceptions.
It was a superb midfield display from the 28-year-old, who showed tremendous control in the centre of the park against the in-form side in the country.
Despite his efforts, the Gunners were on the losing side. A few defensive lapses contributed to the defeat, which suggests that there is room for improvement.
There is no time to ponder over the result, considering the short turnaround time for the Aston Villa game.
The Gunners will be in action in Saturday’s lunch-time kick-off, and it could be another testing challenge against Steven Gerrard’s side on the road.
The Midlands outfit have made vast improvements under Gerrard, and it won’t be a straightforward game for the Gunners by any stretch of the imagination.
They are still in control of their Champions League destiny with a one-point lead over United with two matches in hand, but can’t afford back-to-back slip-ups.
